One of the special characteristics of the Mountain Forum is its commitment to serve as an integrative link among nongovernmental, governmental, and private sector concerns and its capacity to have a completely open and broad membership. Forum Membership is free of charge. There are no annual, subscription, or other fees.

As a network of networks, the Mountain Forum seeks to serve local, regional as well as global information needs. At the regional level, there are, as of February 1997, 103 Forum members whose primary region of interest is Asia and the Pacific. Of these, more than seventy five percent are professionals working in upland areas or on mountain issues and approximately thirty percent are mountain inhabitants. The work that these members are engaged in range from activism and policy development to project implementation and research (15%, 44%, 51% and 66% respectively). Thirty one percent of the members indicated that the organisation for which they were working was a grassroots' community organisation.

Sixty percent of the members indicated that they hoped to gain access to mountain-specific information resources from the Mountain Forum email discussion lists. Fifty percent indicated that they hoped to participate in mountain conferences, publications, or other initiatives of the Mountain Forum. Twenty three percent hoped to gain a greater voice for their constituents or stakeholders and forty percent hoped to to expand their network circle. An equal number of members indicated that they were interested in specific knowledge of case studies.
