Indian Assistance of Nrs.44.2 million for two schools in district Mahottari

At a well-attended public function held on April 16, 2007 in district Mahottari, Ambassador of India laid the foundation stone for new building of Shree Ram Secondary School at Matihani VDC, being constructed with a grant assistance of NRs.2,54,59,996/- from the Government of India. The project will be implemented by DDC, Mahottari, with an Oversight Committee consisting of representatives from DDC, School Management Committee and District Education Office to monitor the project for quality construction and effective utilization of the grant. The school, established in 1966, presently has about 1200 students. The new infrastructure being constructed with the cooperation of Government of India would help the school overcome its present constraints of inadequate classrooms and enable it to upgrade to higher secondary level.

At another public function in Mahottari on the same day, Ambassador of India inaugurated the newly constructed school building of Shree Adarsha Madhyamik Vidyalaya at Ratauli VDC built with grant assistance of NRs. 1,88,31,217/- from the Government of India. The project was implemented by the District Development Committee, Mahottari. Shree Adarsha Madhyamik Vidyalaya, established in 1953 as a primary school and one of the oldest in the district, was upgraded to secondary level in 1971 and higher secondary school in 1990, with more than 550 students studying there presently. The school was earlier functioning in old, dilapidated and inadequate classrooms and lacked resources for repair and upgrading. The new building constructed with the assistance of Government of India will provide the requisite infrastructure for the school in keeping with its high educational standards.

These projects are among the three educational projects in district Mahottari undertaken with the Indian assistance. In addition, one ambulance has been gifted by Government of India to Rural Community Development Service Council in Jaleshwar VDC of that district.

In his address at these functions, Ambassador of India underlined the importance of strengthening of education for Nepal's overall development and noted that the primacy being given to educational infrastructure as part of the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme was in accord with this priority. He mentioned that the various cooperation initiatives being undertaken under the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme were reflective of the strength of friendship between the two countries and manifested the determination of the Government and the people of India to support the people of Nepal in realizing their objective of peace and development.

Currently, under the ongoing bilateral economic cooperation programme between India and Nepal, more than 190 projects are being realized in the sectors of education, health, community development and infrastructure covering almost all the districts of Nepal with an outlay of over NRs.2000 crores.
