At a public function held in the Embassy premises in Kathmandu to mark the Republic Day on January 26, 2007, Ambassador of India presented ambulances to twelve recipient organisations, while three ambulances were gifted to organisations located in Districts Parsa, Sarlahi and Bara by Consul General of India, Birgunj at a public function held in Birgunj on the same day.

Since 1994, Government of India has presented a total of 122 ambulances to various organizations across 54 districts in Nepal.

This has helped in bringing health care services at the doorsteps of thousands of people in Nepal, who have no access to such services especially in remote areas, by connecting them with their nearest district hospitals/ health centres. For example, based on feedback available with the Embassy from 59 recipient organisations since June 2005, more than 14,000 patients have been served by ambulances gifted by Government of India. These services have benefited expecting mothers, contributing to decline in infant mortality and death during child delivery, as also conflict victims in many remote areas of Nepal, whose lives have been saved by providing prompt medical attention during difficult times. In many cases, critically ill patients have been rescued after being shifted to specialty hospitals across the border into India with the help of these ambulances.

Education constitutes a very important part of Nepal-India cooperation. Ambassador of India presented books to 15 schools, colleges and libraries of Nepal, mostly located in remote and rural areas. The books presented will benefit young students and also senior citizens of Nepal who patronise these libraries.

Classical music holds a special place in the close cultural affinities and ties between India and Nepal. Generations of renowned classical music exponents of Nepal received their education in India and there is regular interaction and exchange at the level of both clssical music students and performers even today. Ambassador of India presented various classical musical instruments such as sitar, tabla, pakhawaj, dholak, ghunghroo, harmonium, flute, violin, etc. to ten music colleges and organisations engaged in study and promotion of classical music. These instruments will not only help the students of classical music but will also serve to further catalyse resurgence of classical music studies in Nepal.

Through such initiatives, which are part of the on-going economic cooperation programme between India and Nepal with an outlay of NRs. 2000 crores covering more than 170 projects and reaching out to almost all the districts of Nepal in the sectors of education, health, community development and infrastructure, Government of India continues to strengthen development cooperation with Nepal.
