Indian Assistance of Nrs. 2.36 crore for Educational Institutes in Palpa and Gulmi

In separate public functions held on March 28, 2007, on behalf of Ambassador of India, Counsellor (Economic Cooperation), Embassy of India, Mr. Pranay Verma, laid the foundation stones for the new building of Tansen Multiple Campus in Tansen, Palpa and Shree Resunga Secondary School in Tamghas, Gulmi, being constructed with the assistance of Government of India. The functions were attended by representatives of DDC and local administration, community leaders and a large number of people from the area.

While the multiple campus in Tansen is the first project undertaken by Government of India (GoI) in the district of Palpa, the secondary school in Tamghas is the second GOI-assisted project in district Gulmi under the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme. Earlier, Government of India has provided grant for solar electrification of three villages (Bhadgaon, Arkhale and Bharse) in district Gulmi. An ambulance was also gifted to the District Hospital of Tamghas in 2002.

Under these projects, Government of India is providing grants of NRs.1,54,73,302/- to DDC, Palpa and NRs.81,29,658 to DDC, Gulmi for the construction of the new buildings. The projects will be implemented by concerned DDC, while an Oversight Committee consisting of the representatives of respective DDC, the institute management committee and District Education Officer will monitor the project with a view to ensure quality construction and effective utilization of the cooperation grant.

Established in 1991, Tansen Multiple Campus is an important centre for higher education in district Palpa and presently has close to 750 students. However, the campus lacks adequate infrastructure to cope with the increasing number of students. Shree Resunga Secondary School at Tamghas, Gulmi was established in 1968 and presently has over 600 students, including children of ex-servicemen. It is being run largely with the help of community support.

Despite their dilapidated and inadequate infrastructure, the two institutes have maintained high educational standards and significantly fulfilled the educational needs of their respective areas. It is hoped that the new buildings to be constructed with the assistance of Government of India would enable these two important educational centres in their districts to create a more conducive environment for teaching and learning

Conveying the message from Ambassador of India during these functions, Counsellor (Economic Cooperation), Embassy of India underlined the importance of educational infrastructure for Nepal's overall national development and highlighted the primacy being given to the educational sector in the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme.

The two projects are part of the ongoing bilateral economic cooperation programme between India and Nepal, under which more than 185 projects are being realized in the sectors of education, health, community development and infrastructure covering almost all the districts of Nepal with an outlay of over NRs.2000 crores.
