Government of India Gifts Ambulances, School Buses and Books to Various Organisations in Nepal on the Occasion of the Independence Day of India

On the occasion of the 61st Independence Day of India on August 15, 2007, seventeen ambulances were gifted by Government of India to the following non-profit charitable/ government organizations in different parts of Nepal:

1. Seti Anchal Hospital, Dhangadi, Kailali
2. Kapilavastu District Hospital, Kapilavastu
3. Baglung District Hospital, Baglung
4. District Hospital, Khalanga, Salyan
5. District Hospital, Jumla
6. District Hospital, Gaur, Rautahat
7. Hetauda Hospital, Makwanpur
8. Sub Health Post, Pakali, Sunsari
9. Ilaka Health Post, Ramgopalpur, Mahottari
10. Manthali Primary Health Centre, Ramechap
11. Madi Primary Health Centre, Chitwan
12. Nepal Red Cross Society, Kharanitar Sub Branch, Nuwakot
13. Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh, Gulmi
14. Maiti Nepal, Gaushala, Kathmandu
15. Friends of Needy Children, Tikhedeval, Lalitpur
16. Swatantra Bhu Puu Sainik Sangathan, Baglung
17. Bhu Puu Sainik Kalyankari Sangathan, Ilam

At a public function held in the Embassy premises in Kathmandu to mark the Independence Day on August 15, 2007, Ambassador of India, Shri Shiv Shankar Mukherjee presented ambulances to thirteen recipient organisations, while four ambulances for organisations located in Districts Makwanpur, Rautahat, Chitwan and Mahottari were gifted by Consul General of India, Birgunj at a public function held in Birgunj on the same day.

Since 1994, Government of India has presented a total of 139 ambulances to various organizations across 57 districts in Nepal. This has helped in bringing health care services at the doorsteps of thousands of people in Nepal, who lack adequate medical care, especially in remote areas, by connecting them with their nearest district hospitals/ health centres. Based on feedback available with the Embassy from 83 recipient organisations, more than 16,500 patients have been served since June 2005 by ambulances gifted by Government of India.

Apart from the ambulances, Ambassador Mukherjee, on behalf of Government of India, presented school buses to the following educational institutions in Nepal on the same occasion:

1. Adarsh Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Parasi, Nawalparasi
2. Shree Bhoj Bhagat High School, Lipanimal, Bara
3. Mahakaleshwory Secondary School, Thakre VDC, Dhading

Government of India has so far gifted 24 buses to various schools in different districts of Nepal since 2002. These buses aid the educational effort, particularly for the underprivileged students and schools located in remote areas.

During the Independence Day function, Ambassador Mukherjee also presented books worth NRs. 300,000 to 17 educational and training institutions located in different regions of Nepal, including some remote districts such as Bajura, Baitadi and Mustang.

Through such initiatives, which are part of the on-going economic cooperation programme between India and Nepal having an outlay of over NRs. 21 billions with more than 230 large and small projects reaching out to almost all the districts of Nepal, Government of India remains committed to constantly strengthening development cooperation with Nepal in the critical areas of education, health, community development and infrastructure.
