Indian Assistance of NRs. 76.77 million for Educational, Health and Community Development Projects in Districts Siraha and Kapilvastu

Embassy of India, Kathmandu entered into four separate Memoranda of Understanding on August 1, 2007 with the concerned DDC and beneficiary organisations for providing grant assistance totalling NRs. 76.77 million for educational, health and community development projects in districts Siraha and Kapilvastu.

This included (a) grant assistance of NRs. 21.33 million for construction of four-storied hospital building for Dhangadhi Natural Health Hospital at Dhangadhi, Siraha, (b) grant assistance of NRs.26.9 million for construction of 25-bed Chandra Narayan Yadav Memorial Maternity Hospital at Madar VDC, Siraha, (c) grant assistance of NRs.27.86 million for construction of school and laboratory building for Shree Gautam Buddha Secondary School, Jayanagar, Kapilvastu, and (c) gifting of 100 sewing machines worth NRs.0.68 million to Chandra Narayan Yadav Memorial Trust, Siraha for a training institute for socially and economically backward women.

The Dhangadhi Natural Health Hospital, at Siraha will be managed by Institute of Natural Health (IONAH) having its headquarters in Kathmandu and branches at Nepalganj, Jajarkot, Palpa and Dang and Dhangadhi (Siraha). The new hospital will serve a large catchment area of Siraha and adjoining districts by providing alternative therapy and health care services through naturopathy.

The 25-bed Chandra Narayan Yadav Memorial Maternity Hospital, Siraha will provide improved maternity and health care services to about 300,000 people of 50 VDCs of the district. This is the second maternity hospital in Siraha being constructed with the Indian assistance. Government of India is already providing grant assistance of NRs.22.94 million for construction of building for Mahendra Genai Memorial Maternity and Child Welfare Hospital at Chhaprari Bazar, Siraha.

Chandra Narayan Yadav Memorial Trust, Siraha has proposed to establish a training centre for training of socially and economically disadvantaged women in cutting and tailoring, thereby creating avenues for income generation for them. Government of India has agreed to assist this initiative by gifting 100 sewing machines worth NRs.0.68 million to the trust, which will impart training to about 500 women of the district every year.

Shree Gautam Buddha Secondary School located in Jayanagar VDC of Kapilvastu was established in 1978 and is among one of the reputed schools of the district. The school presently has more than 1200 students, of which 50% are girls, coming from five adjoining VDCs and serving a population of more than 30,000. The new infrastructure being constructed with the assistance of Government of India will help the school in addressing its current space constraint and meeting the requirements of its growing number of students.

The above construction projects will be implemented by the DDC concerned and will have oversight committees comprising representatives from the relevant beneficiary organisation, DDC and the district education/health office to oversee the projects for their effective and timely implementation.

These are among eight infrastructure projects in district Siraha and two infrastructure projects in district Kapilvastu being undertaken by the Government of India in recent years and overall, are part of more than 220 large and small projects currently being implemented under the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme in the sectors of education, health, community development and infrastructure covering all the districts of Nepal with an outlay of over NRs.20 billions.
