Indian Assistance of NRs. 52.3 Million for Two Schools in District Sunsari

Two separate Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) were signed on July 31, 2007 by the Embassy of India, Kathmandu with District Development Committee, Sunsari and the respective school authorities for the construction of school buildings with (a) grant assistance of NRs.22.3 million for Shree Mahendra Higher Secondary School, Mahendranagar VDC and (b) grant assistance of NRs. 30 million for Shree Bhadgaun Sinuwari Model Higher Secondary School, Jhumka VDC.

Shree Mahendra Higher Secondary School located in Mahendranagar VDC was established in 1956 as a primary school and upgraded as higher secondary school in 2000. The school has more than 1800 students coming from five adjoining VDCs, covering a population of approximately 30,000. The school is presently running classes from a flood-ravaged building. The new infrastructure being constructed with the Indian assistance would provide the much-needed proper space for classrooms in the school.

Shree Bhadgaun Sinuwari Model Higher Secondary School located in Jhumka VDC was established in 1951 and is one of the oldest schools of Sunsari. Presently, it has more than 2000 students. The new building will help the school in overcoming space constraints caused by increasing number of students.

Under the MoUs, the two projects will be implemented by DDC, Sunsari, while separate oversight committees consisting of representatives from the respective school management, representatives of District Education Office and DDC, will be constituted to oversee the projects for their effective and timely implementation.

These two projects are among seven infrastructure projects undertaken by the Government of India in recent years in District Sunsari and overall, are part of more than 220 large and small projects currently being implemented under the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme in the sectors of education, health, community development and infrastructure covering all the districts of Nepal with an outlay of over NRs.20 billions.
