In a public function held on July 4, 2007, Mr. Pranay Verma, Counsellor (Economic Cooperation) inaugurated on behalf of Ambassador of India Mr. Shiv Shankar Mukherjee the newly constructed library building at the Pindeshwar Campus of Nepal Sanskrit University in Dharan, which has been built with a grant assistance of NRs.5.76 million from the Government of India. The project has been implemented by District Development Committee, Sunsari.
Established in 1951 and affiliated to the Nepal Sanskrit University of Nepal, the Campus imparts education in Sanskrit language and literature up to the Master's level. Presently with 350 students, it is one of the oldest educational institutions in the eastern Nepal, with a strong tradition of classical studies on Vedic literature, culture and civilization. The new library building constructed with the assistance of Government of India has been named "Mahakavi Kalidas Bhawan" after the legendary Indian scholar of Sanskrit and will help the Campus in collecting and storing invaluable classical manuscripts and books on Sanskrit language and literature.
In his address at the function, Ambassador of India expressed the hope that the newly constructed library building will emerge as a strong icon of age-old cultural interactions between India and Nepal and will not only benefit the Campus students, but also attract students, readers and researchers from elsewhere. He also underlined the importance of educational infrastructure for Nepal's national development and highlighted the primacy being given to the education sector in the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme.
The new library building, which is the seventh educational infrastructure project with the Indian assistance in District Sunsari, is part of the ongoing bilateral economic cooperation programme between India and Nepal, under which more than 220 projects are being realized in the sectors of education, health, community development and infrastructure covering almost all the districts of Nepal with an outlay of over NRs.2000 crores.
