Indian Assistance of NR 3.48 crore for Two Schools and Deep Tube Wells in district Jhapa

At separate public functions held on June 21, 2007, Ambassador of India, Shri Shiv Shankar Mukherjee laid the foundation stones for the new buildings of Shree Adarsha Vidya Mandir Higher Secondary School, Ghailadubba-7 and Shree Pashupati Secondary School, Rajgadh being constructed with grant assistance of NRs.2,14,48,981/- and NRs.1,44,00,397/- respectively from the Government of India.

Shree Adarsha Vidya Mandir Higher Seconday School in Ghailadubba VDC and Shree Pashupati Secondary School in Rajgadh VDC are two important schools of their localities in District Jhapa and cover a large area of adjoining VDCs. Established with community support in the late 1950s and early 1960s respectively, both these schools are among the oldest in their areas and together fulfill the educational needs of close to three thousand students (over 1500 students for Shree Adarsha Vidya Mandir and over 1200 for Shree Pashupati Secondary School). These schools are presently functioning in old, dilapidated and inadequate classrooms and lack resources for their repair and upgrading. These projects are being implemented by DDC, Jhapa, while oversight committees have been constituted consisting of representatives of DDC, School Management Committee and District Education Office to monitor both the projects to ensure quality construction and effective utilization of the grant.

An another public function held at Budhabare VDC, Ward No. 2 Jhapa on June 21, 2007, Ambassador of India inaugurated the two Farmer-Managed Deep Tubewell Systems (RHT-1 & RHT-2). These tube wells are among the 22 Farmer-Managed Deep Tubewell systems being developed in Jhapa, Sunsari, Saptari and Siraha districts, for which Government of India has sanctioned cooperation grant of NRs.6,42,13,752/-. The project is being implemented by Ground Water Resources Development Board (GWRDB), Ministry of Water Resources, Government of Nepal. The tube wells will provide improved irrigation infrastructure for about 880 hectares of land in the four districts and will improve income generating capacity of farmers who are presently dependent on the rain-fed irrigation.

These are among seven projects, including three educational ones, undertaken by Government of India in district Jhapa under the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme. In addition, five ambulances have been gifted by the Government of India to various organizations in that district.

In his address at these functions, Ambassador of India underlined the importance of educational and other infrastructure as part of the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme for overall development and reiterated the commitment of the Government and the people of India to support the people of Nepal in seeking lasting peace and development.

Currently, under the ongoing bilateral economic cooperation programme between India and Nepal, more than 200 large and small projects are being realized in the sectors of education, health, community development and infrastructure covering all the districts of Nepal with an outlay of over NRs.2000 crores.
