India provides uterus prolapse surgical equipment worth NRs.18,72,534/- to 15 government hospitals in 5 Development Regions of Nepal

In a function held on May 24, 2007, on behalf of Ambassador of India, Counsellor(EC) handed over uterus prolapse surgical equipment to 15 Government hospitals located in five Development Regions of Nepal through the Rural Women Development and Unity Centre (RUWDUC), Kathmandu which is involved in identifying and providing services to women with gynaecological morbidities, especially uterus prolapse and create awareness about safe motherhood issues including reproductive hygiene on national level. The equipment, worth NRs.18,72,534/- were provided to these hospitals under India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme. This organisation would use these equipment while conducting Gynaecological Health Camps on Maternal Morbidity with special focus on uterus prolapse.

Prolapsed Uterus is a common ailment threatening lives of many women in Nepal especially those living in the remote and difficult regions. The surgical equipment gifted by Government of India is expected to address this problem in some measure.

In the health sector, India-Nepal cooperation is witnessing implementation of 13 small development projects in different districts of Nepal and three large projects. These include establishment of a 200 bed Emergency & Trauma Centre at Bir Hospital, construction/expansion work of Paropkar Hospital at Kathmandu, assistance for goitre controlling through supply of iodized salt nationwide, gifting of 122 ambulances. BPKIHS, Dharan was established with Indian assistance worth over Indian Rupee 100 crore in 1999. Government of India has also been providing assistance worth NRs.1.25 crores every year in cataract and trachoma treatment in Nepal that cures 12,000 patients every year.

The gifting of the equipment is part of the ongoing bilateral economic cooperation programme between India and Nepal, under which more than 200 projects are being realized in the sectors of health, education, community development and infrastructure covering almost all the districts of Nepal with an outlay of over NRs.2000 crores.
