At a well-attended public function held on May 14, 2007 at Mahuwa Khajuri VDC of district Dhanusha, Ambassador of India Shri Shiv Shankar Mukherjee laid the foundation stone for a five kilometre road from Mahuwa Khajuri to Lagma Bazar being constructed with a grant assistance of NRs.2,69,26,050/- from the Government of India. The project will be implemented by DDC, Dhanusha, with an Oversight Committee consisting of representatives from DDC, Department of Roads and Planning & Administrative Officer of district Dhanusha to monitor the project’s satisfactory implementation and effective utilisation of the grant.
At present, people of Mahuwa VDC in Dhanusha face day-to-day difficulty due to lack of connectivity with the adjoining areas, including the nearby market and schools. Construction of the road linking Mahuwa Khajuri with Lagma Bazar will improve connectivity of Mahuwa VDC with the local market and a prominent school of the area – KSHSB Higher Secondary School, Mahuwa – which is also being constructed with the assistance of Government of India. Apart from benefiting about 700 school children and 40,000 people of these villages, the proposed road will also create improved linkages between the border markets in India and Khajuri and other markets of Nepal, thus further reinforcing economic ties between the two countries.
This is among the eight infrastructural development projects undertaken by the Government of India in Dhanusha as part of the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme, apart from gifting of books, equipment, ambulances and school buses to various institutions in that district.
In his address at the function, Ambassador of India noted the emphasis on the development of basic infrastructure like roads, particularly in rural areas, under the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme. He observed that road projects like that between Mahuwa Khajuri and Lagma Bazar would not only facilitate the mobility and development of local people, but were also important to bring closer the people on both sides of the Indo-Nepal border through improved connectivity. He reiterated the commitment of the Government and the people of India to support the people of Nepal in achieving lasting peace and development.
Currently, under the ongoing bilateral economic cooperation programme between India and Nepal, more than 200 projects are being realized in the sectors of education, health, community development and infrastructure covering almost all the districts of Nepal with an outlay of over NRs.2000 crores.
