Indian Assistance of NRs.4.53 million to Nepal Srijanatmak Kala Guthi, Lalitpur, Kathmandu

At a public function held on July 14, 2006 at Lalitpur, Ambassador of India handed over a Silk Twisting Machine to the authorities of Nepal Srijanatmak Kala Guthi, Lalitpur. The function was well attended by a large number of students, faculty members, administrative staff and community leaders.

The machine and its related training costing NRs. 4.53 million is a manifestation of the commitment of Government of India under India-Nepal Economic Cooperation, to promote vocational training in Nepal in an area that touches lives of many rural women in Nepal. Srijanatmak Kala Guthi authorities have had a long and close association with India, as they run the institute on Gandhian principles. As disciples of Tulsi Meher, a noted Gandhian, the authorities are dedicated to the emancipation of their women trainees through skill development in weaving and independent income generation through this skill. Government of India has been assisting in this training since 1950s through the deputation under the ITEC scheme of master weavers as teachers. The new machine will also enable the Guthi to fulfill part of its requirements for recognition by CTEVT, on whose parameters, its courses would be run in future.

This is part of economic cooperation between two neighbours, that is currently witnessing implementation of 142 projects in 61 districts with an outlay of NRs. 1800 crores in areas of education, health and infrastructure.

During the visit of the Prime Minister of Nepal to India in June 2006, it was agreed to intensify this economic cooperation following its success for the benefit of the people of Nepal.
