NRS.34.54 MILLION INDIAN ASSISTANCE FOR SOLAR ELECTRIFICATION OF VILLAGE IN TEHRATHUM

VDC Jaljale in District Tehrathum has started obtaining electricity using one of the most modern and environmentally clean sources of electricity. This project was implemented with assistance from the Government of India at a cost of NRs.34.54 million. Under the scheme, 630 homes of 4500 people in village Jaljale in District Tehrathum have started receiving light from the home lighting system using solar electrification. Each of the homes are now equipped with a solar panel, a maintenance free battery and home lighting system of 75 Watts, consisting of 4 lighting instruments of 12 Watts each. This has been the fifth year running, when a solar electrification project has been successfully executed. Last year, similar solar electrification projects with total outlay of NRs.42.45 million, were executed in two villages in District Dhading and District Gulmi. So far Government of India has executed ten solar electrification projects. This has given an impetus for such projects in future.

The project was executed by the Central Electronics Ltd., Ghaziabad, a Public Sector Undertaking of Government of India, in close co-ordination with the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre(AEPC) under the Ministry of Science & Technology of Government of Nepal. In the execution of this project, the Gaon Upbhokta Samiti (Village Consumer Committee) was specifically constituted and involved in all stages of project planning and implementation. For subsequent maintenance and upkeep of these systems, a pool of six to eight trained personnel from amongst the villagers, has been trained in each village, by imparting training to them by a technician from Central Electronics Ltd. In addition, a corpus has been created by local contribution, which has been invested in the local banks, and its interest will be utilized for subsequent maintenance of the system. Management of the corpus fund will be the responsibility of the Gaon Upbhokta Samiti constituted to oversee this project.

The project was formally inaugurated and handed over by Shri Pranay Verma, Counsellor (EC), Embassy of India to the Gaon Upbhokta Samiti at Village Jaljale, District Tehrathum on December 24, 2006, with great fanfare and enthusiasm by the people of the village. Senior local officials of Government of Nepal were present on this occasion, as also community leaders and intellectuals.
