Two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) were signed between the Embassy of India, Kathmandu and Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS)

Two Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) were signed between the Embassy of India, Kathmandu and Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh (NNJS) on June 27,2006 for extending and enhancing the provision of eye care services to the people of Nepal in the important areas of cataract control and trachoma treatment. India Nepal Cooperation for control and treatment of cataract in Nepal has been immensely successful over the last six years. 10,000 patients are treated every year and till date, the cataract operations performed by NNJS medical specialists have been fully successful. Headed by pioneering eye surgeon Dr. R.P. Pokhrel, NNJS's high standards and devotion to health care for the needy have encouraged Government of India to enhance cooperation with this organization for the benefit of the people of Nepal.

For the first time, treatment of trachoma is also being undertaken under the cooperation programme whereby 2000 surgeries would be conducted throughout Nepal, during the current year. This is part of the cooperation between two friendly neighbours in the area of health that has witnessed the establishment of hospitals, provision of ambulances, treatment and eradication of visible goitre etc.

Government of India through its economic cooperation programme has focused on three key sectors, namely health, education and infrastructure, in Nepal. 139 projects are currently under implementation in 61 districts at a cost of NRs.1800/- Crores. These projects reflect India's commitment to strengthen an increased economic cooperation between India and Nepal, reiterated at the highest level of the political leadership of both countries during the recent visit to India by Prime Minister of Nepal.
