INDIA PROVIDES ASSISTANCE OF NRs.2, 44, 72,696/- FOR ELECTRIFICATION OF THORI AND NIRMAL BASTI VDCs IN PARSA DISTRICT

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed today on November 22, 2006 between the Embassy of India, Kathmandu and the District Development Committee, Parsa on Rural Electrification Project in Thori and Nirmal Basti Village Development Committees (VDCs) in Parsa district.

This Project is to be implemented as India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme under which the Government of India will be providing a grant assistance to the tune of NRs.2,44,72,696/-.

The project involves complete work on electrification of Thori and Nirmal Basti VDCs in Parsa district which are without electricity at present. These two VDCs located in remote areas of Parsa district have a total population of 7072 people with 3700 households. On completion of the project, the two villages will be fully electrified, thus bringing direct benefits to them. Apart from enhancing living standards of the local people, this project of providing electricity and power supply in the area is expected to bring small scale industrial and commercial developments also. A similar project of electrification of 4 villages in Sarlahi district is about to be completed. Apart from these projects, under the bilateral economic cooperation programme, so far 11 villages in different districts have benefited through Solar Electrification Projects using Solar Photovoltaic panels. Provision of electricity to households brings about a quantum change in the villages including enhanced lifestyle, education, health and work efficiency.

This project forms part of 160 projects currently being implemented under the India-Nepal Cooperation Programme in 65 districts of Nepal in the priority areas of education, health and infrastructure with an outlay of NRs.2000 crores. The success of the Small Development Project Scheme has encouraged the Government of India to triple its commitment under it, so enunciated during the visit of Prime Minister of Nepal in June, 2006 .
