At a public function held on May 25, 2006 at Rautahat the foundation stone for the construction of bridge on Bagmati River was laid by Ambassador, Embassy of India. The public function was well attended by representatives of the local administration, community leaders and large number of people from the area and adjoining villages. The bridge will be called 'Nepal Bharat Maitri Pul'.
Government of India has sanctioned assistance of NRs.2,43,12,047/- for the bridge. An agreement was signed on March 16, 2006 between the Embassy of India and District Development Committee, Rautahat laying down the modalities of providing Indian assistance for this project. The construction would be executed by the DDC, Rautahat in accordance with prescribed procedures of the Government of Nepal.
A Monitoring Committee has been constituted consisting of members of the Department of Roads, Chief District Technical Officer and Planning and Administrative Officer, Rautahat to supervise construction and ensure proper utilisation of the grant assistance.
The implementation of the above project would go a long way in improving the infrastructure & increasing trade and people-to-people movement and their interaction, benefiting around 3 lakh residents living in 41 VDCs in Nepal. Government of India is committed to such economic cooperation for in the area of infrastructure, health and education, to assist the Government and people of Nepal in the immediate and enormous task of the economic recovery of Nepal.
It is part of Government of India's commitment of NRs.1800 crore towards economic cooperation with Government of Nepal, under which 137 projects in 61 districts are being undertaken.
