Indian Assistance of NRs.24.4 million for construction of a bridge on Bagmati River at Gaur in Rautahat

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed on March 16, 2006 between the Embassy of India and District Development Committee, Rautahat regarding grant assistance of NRs.2,43,93,047/- for construction of a bridge on Bagmati river at India-Nepal border in District Rautahat.

The bridge is located at one of the 22 transit points listed in the Transit Treaty. The project proposal envisages construction of a three girder RCC T – Beam bridge (IRS Class -A) with deep well foundation, two spans (length of each span 20 metres) and overall width 7.10 metres. The proposed bridge was requested by Rautahat Development Trust, Gaur. The bridge will be constructed by District Technical Office of District Development Committee, Rautahat, within a year.

The bridge in Rautahat will benefit the population of more than 3 lakhs in 41 VDCs of the District that borders India. This bridge will not only facilitate the transport of the agricultural goods of the farmers but also enhance trade as part of the traffic bound to Kathmandu from Patna (in India) will be diverted through this bridge.

The proposed bridge is yet another example of the ongoing economic cooperation in the social development domain between India and Nepal. As many as 133 developmental projects in Nepal in other key sectors of health, education and infrastructure are now being carried out in 61 districts in Nepal, with an outlay of NRs.1400 crores.
