50 Golden Jubilee Scholarships for Under-Graduates

           The Golden Jubilee Scholarship Scheme (GJSS) was launched by the Government of India in 2002 to mark 50 years of Economic Cooperation between India and Nepal. Under this Scheme, 50 Nepalese students undertaking different undergraduate courses in Nepal are selected for this scholarship. A monthly stipend of Rs.3,000/- is given to 10 students each doing MBBS / B.E and Rs.2,000/- per month is given to 30 students doing other courses, including B.Sc, BBS, BBA, Bio-Technology and Humanities etc. until completion of their degree. The students are selected on the basis of merit and need. Fifty percent of the seats are reserved for students from educationally disadvantaged districts.

           The third batch of the Golden Jubilee Scholarship Scheme was felicitated today. His Excellency, Shiv Shankar Mukerjee, the Ambassador of India gave away Certificates of Merit to the scholars.           There is an extensive relationship between India and Nepal in the field of human resources development. Every year, Government of India provides nearly a 1000 scholarships / seats or training slots to Nepalese nationals. Apart from GJSS, 500 scholarships under the Mahatma Gandhi Scheme (Rs.500 per month) are given to students of classes XI and XII studying in Nepal. In addition, tens of thousand of Nepalese students have undergone studies in India in a wide range of courses including Medicine, Engineering, Business Studies, Agriculture, IT, Music, Fine Arts, Film, Hotel Management etc. under scholarships/admissions provides by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu and the Consulate in Birgunj. Training is also provided to Nepalese nationals in the areas of media, S&T, HRD, planning, urban development etc.

     In addition to the scholarships and admissions administered by the Indian Embassy, it is estimated that over a lakh and half Nepalese students are presently studying in India on their own accord.
