No.KAT/20/2002
5th July, 2002

The Government of India has banned Akhil Bharat Nepali Ekta Samaj (ABNES) under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2002 (POTA).

This organization was registered in Varanasi in November, 1979, with the stated objective of securing unity among immigrant Nepalese residing in India and working for the welfare of such Nepalese nationals. Contrary to these objectives, it has come to notice recently that the organization has become involved in terrorism. ABNES has, therefore, been included in the list of organizations banned under POTA. This was notified in the
Gazette of India on July 1, 2002.

The Government of India is supporting Nepal’s fight against Maoist terrorist activities. During the visit to India of Rt. Hon’ble Prime Minister of Nepal, the Prime Ministers of India and Nepal had reiterated the determination of the two countries to work closely in fighting the scourge of terrorism which was adversely affecting peace and stability in the region and was also impeding socio-economic development.
