Government of India Gifts Buses to Constituent Assembly of Nepal
 

At a brief ceremony held at the Constituent Assembly at the International Convention Centre in Kathmandu in the afternoon of 22 September 2008, Ambassador of India, Shri Rakesh Sood handed over to Rt Hon'ble Chairman of the Constituent Assembly of Nepal H.E. Mr. Subas Chandra Nembang five 32-seater buses worth over NR 5.5 million.

The buses have been provided in response to a request from the Constituent Assembly (CA) and Legislature-Parliament Secretariat for movement of Hon'ble CA Members and are expected to augment the logistics of the Secretariat to help CA in its smooth functioning.

Speaking briefly at the ceremony, Ambassador Sood pointed out that the gifting of the buses symbolized India's continued commitment to extend all possible support to Nepal's democratic and economic transformation. He noted that India’s wide-ranging support to the peace process in Nepal reflected the willingness of the people and Government of India to respond with a sense of urgency to the needs of the people and Government of Nepal in ensuring the success of the peace process and lasting political and economic stability of the country. He added that this commitment has been reiterated at the highest level, most recently during the visit of the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister of Nepal to India. The Rt Hon'ble Chairman of Constituent Assembly of Nepal H.E. Mr. Subas Chandra Nembang thanked the Government of India for its cooperation.

Apart from continued developmental assistance involving over 290 large and small development projects with an outlay of over NR 23 billions in different parts of Nepal, the Government of India has extended material support worth over NR 2.7 billion to Nepal's peace process, including for the successful conduct of the Constituent Assembly elections, in the form of various essential items, such as vehicles, communication equipment, electronic voting machines, etc.
