Indian Assistance of NRs. 25.66 million for construction of School in Taplejung

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed on August 14, 2008 by the Embassy of India, Kathmandu with the Ilam Division Office of the Department of Urban Development & Building Construction (DUDBC) of GON and Nil Giri Secondary School in district Taplejung for providing grant assistance of NRs.25.66 million for construction of new building for the school under India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme.

Established in 1956 as a primary school, Nil Giri Secondary School in Taplejung’s Mehele VDC is one of the oldest schools of this remote mountain district in the northeastern Nepal. The school presently holds classes upto X for about 700 students, of which almost 50% are girls. The current infrastructure of the school needs reinforcement to cope with the existing and growing requirements. The new infrastructure being constructed with the Indian assistance will provide the school the much-needed classroom space and will enable its further upgradation to the higher-secondary level. The project will be implemented by DUDBC’s Ilam Division Office, while an oversight committee consisting of representatives from School Management Committee will monitor the implementation of the project.

This is the first educational infrastructure project undertaken by the Government of India in district Taplejung and overall, is among more than 290 large and small projects currently being implemented under the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme in the sectors of education, health, community development and infrastructure covering almost all districts of Nepal with an outlay of over NRs. 23 billions.
