Indian Assistance of NRs.19.77 Million for School Project in District Darchula

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on June 25, 2008 by the Embassy of India, Kathmandu with the District Development Committee, Darchula and Shree Shankarpur Higher Secondary School, Pasti VDC in district Darchula, for providing a grant assistance of NRs.19.77 million for the construction the school’s new classroom and library building under the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme.

Established in 1957 as a primary school and subsequently upgraded to higher secondary level in 1996, Shree Shankarpur Higher Secondary School serves as a centre for education for four adjoining VDCs, providing education from class I to XII to more than 800 students, out of which over 50% are girls. The new infrastructure, including a double-storied building with eight classrooms, two staff rooms, meeting hall, library and separate toilets for boys and girls, will help the school meet the needs to accommodate increasing number of students and create a more conducive environment for teaching and learning. The project will be implemented by the District Development Committee, Darchula, while an oversight committee consisting of school's representatives will oversee the implementation of the project.

This is the second educational project undertaken by the Government of India in district Darchula in recent years and overall, is among more than 275 large and small projects currently being implemented under the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme in the sectors of education, health, community development and infrastructure covering all districts of Nepal with an outlay of over NRs.21.5 billions.
