A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on June 2, 2008 by the Embassy
of India, Kathmandu with the District Development Committee, Morang and Shree Saraswati
Higher Secondary School of Morang’s Itahara VDC for providing a grant assistance of
NRs.23.57 million for the construction of the school’s new building under the India-Nepal
Economic Cooperation Programme.
Established in 1969 as a primary school, Shree Saraswati Higher Secondary School
provides education to over 1600 students, half of them being girl students, coming from
Itahara and three adjoining VDCs. It is hoped that the new double-storied building with 25
classrooms, science laboratory, library and necessary utilities being constructed with the
Indian assistance will ease the infrastructure constraint of the school and help it upgrade to
bachelor's level in future. The project will be implemented by the District Development
Committee, Morang, while an oversight committee consisting of school’s representatives will
oversee the implementation of the project.
This is the sixth development project undertaken by the Government of India in district
Morang in recent years and overall, is among more than 275 large and small projects
currently being implemented under the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme in the
sectors of education, health, community development and infrastructure covering all the
districts of Nepal with an outlay of over NRs.21.5 billions.
